PINE GROVE CEMETERY is located behind Pine Grove United Methodist Church on
Whitaker Road in Section 37 in T1N R1W of Wilkinson County, Mississippi (near
Woodville). The deed to the property was given by E. A. Robinson and Thos. M.
Wetherall to the Trustees of the Church on June 11, 1880 as recorded in Land Deed
Book BB, page 254. Ellisson Turner, William Davis and Elias R. Gibson were the
trustees at that time. Later Trustees on January 5, 1907 included Stephen Blackmore,
Clark Stewart, Carroll Johnson, Phil Beverly, George Rabb and Charles Jones. (Carroll
Johnson’s name may have been Carl Johnson.) The Church is presently maintained by
Clarketta Collins.
This cemetery is in the immediate vicinity of the property once owned by Duncan and
Mary Still, the grandparents of famed American classical composer, William Grant Still
(1895-1978). Duncan and Mary Still owned the property across the road from the Pine
Grove church (Section 38 in T1N R1W) and may well have attended services there and
are thought to be buried there in unmarked or hidden graves.
The expansiveness of the visible tombstones in the cemetery indicates that there are
many other unmarked graves and other tombstones in the cemetery that are hidden by
thick overgrowth. However, the following graves were identified by David S. Dreyer on
February 17, 2010 (listed in alphabetical order):
